St. John’s Wort is best known as an herbal anti-depressant and has been shown to be highly effective in treating mild to moderate depression. It can be used to help stabilize mood swings, PMS, overwhelm, and anxiety. I use it as my go to when life seems a bit too much and I need some perspective. It works quickly and effectively for me without any side effects.
It can also be used to treat external skin conditions, cuts, scrapes, and burns. The herb can be made into a poultice or the area can be washed in a tea. In Eastern Europe an oil is made by infusing the herb into oilve oil and then applied to the affected areas.
I really love having this herb in my tool box and it is one that I use often. I especially like the extracts as they are easy to carry and use. Even though this herb grows in Florida I prefer it’s Canadian cousin. It is so potent and I harvest it at the peak of the summer. I feel that plants from that region have adaptogenic properties that can only add to the benefits of the herb.
